ALL-THROUGH SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS SCHOOL - BIRMINGHAM

Formerly home to the Josiah Mason College the substantial existing building and surrounding site have stood derelict following the colleges vacation of the site. The design brief required the provision of an ‘all-through’ special educational needs school from nursery to post-16 for 200 pupils predominantly with autism and associated learning difficulties.
Key to the success of the scheme design was understanding the areas suitable for retention and adaption. This needed to be achieved in an economical manner but also one that provides flexible and fit for purpose learning and support spaces for the pupils special educational needs. The scheme consists of both new-build accommodation and the major refurbishment of the existing four storey derelict building of c.4500sqm. External teaching, habitat and play areas are also designed into the scheme. Project undertaken whilst working at Acivico Ltd.
