LODGE HILL CEMETERY CHAPELS - OFFICE AND CEMETERY FACILITIES REFURBISHMENT

The conversion of the historic cemetery chapels into modern offices and cemetery facilities provided an exciting and challenging project. Having lay derelict for a number of decades the two identical chapels have remained largely in tact and as such offer a good understanding of the architectural features of the original design.
Whilst not a listed building the contemporary refurbishment proposals have been designed in a sensitive manner respecting the heritage of the original building.. The project brief required the provision of a cemetery reception and office, meeting rooms, public visitor spaces and ‘strong room’ to store sensitive and historic cemetery documents, plus back of house facilities. The limited floor area available resulted in a design that relocated the entrance to the central double height space between the two chapels. This new entrance area is designed as a structurally glazed reception foyer and orientated on the East / West axis respects the traditional Easterly approach to the building. From the entrance foyer visitor and staff facilities located in the former chapels are directly accessed to the North and South respectably. Project undertaken whilst working at Acivico Ltd.
