RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT: BEACONSFIELD HOUSE
Fleming James Architects have been working on Beaconsfield House, a 28 apartment new-build development in the historic cathedral city of Lichfield. The initial project design was undertaken by BHB architects prior to the site being purchased by our developer client, Sidley Piper Homes. A part re-design was undertaken as part of our remit, this included a reduction in the number of apartments as the project progressed through planning and full technical design. Works were due to commence on site in Spring 2020 but has been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The four storey building is located on the corner of Sandford Street, which forms an important gateway to the city centre and is within Lichfield Conservation Area. The site was likely of significance during medieval and post-medieval periods due to its proximity to tanning and leather works. The development consists of contrasting brickwork bays that reflect the materials of local historic buildings, the upper floor is set back as a mansard roof to respect the height of surrounding buildings, including Grade II listed properties opposite and adjacent. The scheme consists of 11 one bed and 17 two bed apartments, plus commercial unit to the ground floor on the prominent corner on Sandford Street. The postponed works are due to start on site in the summer subject to current health restrictions being lifted.
