THORNTON JUNIOR SCHOOL - 8 CLASSROOM EXTENSION

Thornton primary school is a 720 pupil state school in Birmingham. The scheme involved the creation of a seven new classrooms for key stage 2 pupils, a special education needs room, staff room, plus the refurbishment of three existing classrooms to accommodate reception and key stage 1 pupils. The limited site area available and the need to retain external play space is reflected in the narrow footprint of the building. The design incorporates light wells to the rear of the classrooms to provide natural lighting to the full depth of the all teaching spaces. Also serving as ventilation shafts these facilitate a naturally ventilated building. Naturally lit corridors provide light and airy circulation spaces for pupils to move about in during lesson change. Project undertaken whilst working at Acivico Ltd.
